Ash Wednesday 2021

February 17, 2021, Ash Wednesday

Homily by Fr. Romie Jun Peñalosa

Old Testament Proclamation: Joel 2:1-2,12-17

Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 51: 1-13

New Testament Proclamation: 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10

Gospel Proclamation: Matthew 6:1-6;16-21

The Season of Lent is not a somber season. It is a joyful one because we are coming home to God (repentance).

The disciplines needed in our life are emphasized to strengthen our Christian lives and to cleanse us that we may reflect the glory of God to the world.

“Fortification”

God delights to fortify our character that we may be able to courageously bear the sacrifices that we are to make.

A. Giving (in service to others)

Jesus warns us about publicizing our acts of charity. We are to check if our giving is out of the attitude of feeling good about ourselves.

It is difficult to pray when we have greed and selfishness in our life because such dispositions make our prayers geared towards our wants. Thus, Jesus primarily addresses this before prayer and fasting. After all, following Christ means denying ourselves and our selfishness.

B. Prayer

Evaluate your prayer life. Pray without ceasing! According to the church fathers, prayer is a movement inward to the heart, upward to the glory of God, and outward in intercession for other people. In addition, we get to know our true selves when we search our hearts with God.

C. Fasting

Ask the Lord to give you what you need (strength) when you fast. It is not our natural tendency to deliberately choose the “wilderness” — the Spirit drove Christ to the wilderness. Do not allow selfish instincts and possessions to control you.

Living in Christ: Shining in His Glory

February 14, 2021, 6th Sunday of Epiphany

Theme Living In Christ: Shining in His Glory

Homily by Fr. Romie Jun Peñalosa

Old Testament Proclamation: 2 Kings 2:1- 11

Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 50: 1-6

New Testament Proclamation: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6

Gospel Proclamation: Mark 9: 2-9

Today is the last Sunday—the culmination of the Season of Epiphany. In Christmas, we celebrate Christ as Emmanuel, “God with us” the God Who is close to us. In Epiphany, that same God who is with us is manifested to us; made Himself known to us; the God Who did not hide from us.

Fr. Jun told us that as we come with the culmination of the season, we see that:

Whatever Christ would manifest, would reveal Himself to us; whatever that revelation is, He meant to share to us.

The same anointing that Christ received from the Holy Spirit is the same anointing He shared to us.

The wisdom of God which is superior to men is also shared to us—for we have the Mind of Christ.

He also manifested His power and authority and that manifestation of His power and authority are also shared with us.

Christ came to us, so that we can share and be partakers of His Divine nature. He is not insecure to share His glory and His Divine nature with us.

In the Kingdom of God, we are heirs and joint heirs with Christ. For what He inherits from the Father, we also inherit. He shares everything with us. He even shares His glory with us, He met the church to shine in the Glory of Christ.

As Jesus Christ shares everything with us as a church, our light is also used by God to bring our brethren to Christ. We are the star, the light of Christ that shines in the world and serves as guide for our brothers and sisters to come to Him.

We can share in that glory of Christ through the following:

  1. “The need to be set apart.” Christ will set us apart, but we must also bring ourselves to be with Christ. We go deeper in our hearts. We are set apart, but we must have the passion and the effort to be with Christ.

“Glory is related to passion. There is no glory without suffering or without passion as what Fr. Nonoy said”. We must be willing to take and carry the cross and make sacrifices for it leads us to the glory of God.

2. We have to listen to Him.” Christ is willing to share the glory with us, to be manifested also in us but we must listen to Him. We must learn to listen to what God instructs or directs us. A very important thing to do so that we can truly manifest His glory in the world—to listen to Him.

We as His people, as His heirs and joint heirs with Christ need to manifest the glory of God in the world and we can do that if we set apart ourselves to Christ—set apart time to be with Him. Let us intensify our prayer life. “The more we intensify our prayer life or time, the more we manifest the glory of God in our lives. Let us practice the art of listening. As we move to the season of Lent, let us fast not just on food but also cutdown the talking and let us add more to our listening. Let us talk less to God in prayer and listen more to Him—spend quiet time with the Lord.”

If we can do this, we can begin to manifest same glory that we have seen in Christ.

Living In Christ: Prioritizing God’s Purpose

February 7, 2021, 5th Sunday of Epiphany

Theme: Living In Christ: Prioritizing God’s Purpose

Homily by Fr. Andy Ilustre

Old Testament Proclamation: Isaiah 40 : 21 – 31

Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 147 : 1- 4; 15 – 18

New Testament Proclamation: 1 Corinthians 9 : 16 – 23

Gospel Proclamation: Mark 1 : 32 – 39

Our Gospel today speaks of Christ’s authority, dominion, and purpose. After preaching in the synagogues, Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law and many people who are sick with various diseases. He also cast out many demons. With this, Jesus’ fame spread in the region of Galilee. When the people began to see the authority of Jesus, the whole city looked for Him and were gathered together at the door of Simon Peter’s house (verse 33). In the same way, we are to look to Christ as our source of everything that we need in our lives. We are to seek Jesus and His grace, healing, and restoration. In verse 34, Jesus did not permit the demons – our foe – to testify, for His ministry speaks for Who He is. He was healing people from their infirmities and was casting out many demons.

Jesus rose early the following day, left the house, and went out to a solitary place to pray (verse 35). Jesus constantly communed with the Father. As demonstrated by our King, we are to continually seek God’s purpose and calling in our lives.  It is through prayer that we receive His power, motivation, and strength to overcome problems, hindrances, and weaknesses as we continue our journey.

While the people were looking far and wide because of Jesus’ miracles, we are to be mindful of who we are: We are His people and He is our Lord. We are servants and He remains sovereign. Jesus did not merely want to please the crowds. His sole desire was to please the Father. His passion was to focus on His mission and He did not allow the popularity in Capernaum to distract Him from accomplishing His purpose.

In our prayer, we should ask God’s guidance, wisdom, and direction so we can prioritize His purpose. We cannot keep on adding things without properly cutting things out.  We are called to be priority-driven people. Following Christ’s example, let us stay focused on the purpose God set for us.

Living in Christ: Manifesting Divine Authority

January 31, 2021, 4th Sunday of Epiphany

Theme: Living in Christ: Manifesting Divine Authority

Homily by Fr. Erel Villanueva

Old Testament Proclamation: Deuteronomy 18: 15- 20

Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 111

New Testament Proclamation: 1 Corinthians 8: 1-3; 10- 13

Gospel Proclamation: Mark 1: 21-28

How Do We Respond to God’s Authority In Our Lives

Epiphany continues to manifest who Jesus is and His Mission. This demonstrates God’s Power & Authority.

Authority in His Teachings

When Jesus entered the synagogue in Capernaum to teach, the people together with His disciples were astonished for he taught them as someone having authority and not as a scribe. Here, they’ve seen the manifestation, the revelation of God’s power and authority. Jesus has the power to convince, the power to challenge people to change and repent.

Why is there power / authority in His teachings?

1. He was submitted to His Father’s will and authority.

2. The Father and Him is one.

3. Jesus is the Word

4. His authority is a perfect balance of Love, Humility, & Grace.

It’s easy to submit when we feel we are loved rather than controlled or dominated. Jesus submitted to the Father, He obeyed, so the power of God is working in Him because of His obedience and submission to Him. Our obedience and submission to our Father will bring great impact on our lives. Everything in our life is connected to the Word of God.

His Authority Over demons/spirits of darkness

The man with the unclean spirit inside the synagogue disrupted Jesus but he was rebuked and cast out.

When we hear the Word, especially correction and confrontation, what is our attitude? Do we say “leave us alone?” Are we willing to accept correction?

This is an unclean Spirit within us and only God, through His Word and Spirit could deliver us. As a believer, we should not just be amazed by His teaching but we should also believe and obey it and tell others about it.

Living in Christ: Herald of Good News

January 24, 2021, 3rd Sunday of Epiphany

Theme: Living In Christ: Herald of Good News

Homily by Fr. Jun Peñalosa

Old Testament Proclamation: Jonah 3: 1-5; 10

Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 62: 1-12

New Testament Proclamation: 1 Corinthians 7: 29-31

Gospel Proclamation: Mark 1: 14-20

Our Gospel today reminds us of God’s calling in our lives. We are all called by God to repentance. Jesus is the good news announcing God’s call for us all to return home to Him.

The call of God to us for repentance has two dimensions. First, He calls us to follow Jesus to be with Him. Then, He calls us to go into the world and bring others also to follow Jesus.

Feast of the Lord: The Giver of Life

January 17, 2021, 2nd Sunday of Epiphany Theme: Feast of the Lord: The Giver of Life Homily by Fr. Jun Peñalosa Old Testament Proclamation: Jeremiah 31: 10- 17 Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 10 New Testament Proclamation: 1 Corinthians 15: 19-26 Gospel Proclamation: Matthew 18:1-5

For others to see Jesus in us, we need to see Him first in our heart. For the world to see Jesus, the Church must see and experience the life of Christ first.

In Matt 18:1 the disciples asked, ” who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And like them, we often ask ourselves this. Who is important, powerful, influential when it comes to serving God? Greatness in the kingdom of heaven has nothing to do with our success, accomplishment, talents, and status in life. Human frailty is always anxious to be great, to be important, and to be somebody. Then the Lord comes with the answer by saying ” unless you are converted and become as little children you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.”

What is in a child that God uses them as an example for all of humanity? In a child is a pure and humble heart. To enter the kingdom of heaven is to have a pure, innocent and humble heart. To have true humility means to know who you really are in Christ. The path of greatness is one with the path of humility. By walking these roads, only then will we become what we are, by the the grace of God.

Through Christmas, God has given us Jesus to share in our humanity and also for us to share in His divinity. That is why we should empty our lives of all human frailty so that God can fill us with His life. We need to value what God has given us and by humility, we accept His gift of life so that we can manifest His life in the world.

Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ – Living in Christ: Anointed of God

January 10, 2021,1st Sunday of Epiphany, Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ Theme: “Living in Christ: Anointed of God” Homily by Fr. Andy Illustre Old Testament Proclamation: Isaiah 40:1 -7 Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 29 New Testament Proclamation: Acts 19:1-7 Gospel Proclamation: Mark 1:4-11

Jesus came to us through the Baptism of John where He humbly received the baptism of sinners that the sin of the world be crucified with Him.

Jesus identifies with us in Baptism so that He can represent us, sinners.

That which we could not do, that which we could not pay, He humbly took upon Himself through the Baptism of John so that our sins would be with Him on the Cross. He freely accepted us out of love.

He identified with us, sinners. We cannot save ourselves but only through our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus’ Baptism marked the end of Jesus’ private life and embraced living His life fulfilling the will of the Father.

This is also a moment of equipping, when the Holy Spirit equips us with power, with healing, miracles after miracles happen. Baptism reminds us of who we are and Whose we are.

His Baptism reminds us of our mission. Jesus presented Himself to John’s Baptism, so that the prophecies about Him would be fulfilled. The Spirit that Jesus Christ received is the Same Spirit we receive in Baptism and we have received in Baptism.

Every baptized believer is called and formed by God and empowered with the presence of the Holy Spirit. The same mission that the Lord Jesus Christ received is the same mission we have received!

Living in Christ: Matured Sons of the Kingdom

January 3, 2021, 2nd Sunday of Christmas Theme: “Living in Christ: Matured Sons of the Kingdom” Homily by Fr. Erel Villanueva Old Testament Proclamation: Isaiah 40:27 – 31 Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 147 New Testament Proclamation: Ephesians 1:3-6 Gospel Proclamation: Luke 2:41-52

We are all children of God, but not all become sons of God. Sons of God are mature people of God. As sons of God, we have to be mature in the ways of God and have grown up in our relationship with the Lord. Romans 8:14 says, “those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

Sons of God are:

-led by the Spirit of God -willing to put God first -thinking of the ways of God -putting into practice the principles of God -obeying God

Childish people cannot fulfill big responsibilities and God will not give these responsibilities to immature people. To grow in the Lord is our choice, as such, to become a son of God is also a choice. It goes with a process. Even Jesus went through it, and He chose to grow.

A mature person is no longer controlled by his emotions, ways and thinking, but controlled by the Spirit of God. “Not my will, but Your will.”

How to grow in the Lord? -apply what you have learned -do not remain as a babe in the Lord -strengthen your commitment -remain faithful -do not let your emotions take over Hebrews 5:13-14

Jesus, in the midst of persecutions, accusations, and troubles, chose to continue and fulfill the will and plans of God. His heart and mind are focused on Him because He was trained as a child and entirely grew according to the ways of the Lord. A true testament of total obedience to Him. A clear sign of maturity.

Feast of the Holy Name

January 1, 2021 – Feast of the Holy Name Theme: “Feast of the Holy Name” Homily by Fr. Andy Illustre Old Testament Proclamation: Exodus 34:1-8 Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 8 New Testament Proclamation: Romans 1:1-7 Gospel Proclamation: Luke 2:15-21

This new year reminds us of our covenant with Jesus, that He is Emmanuel – our God with us.

We are in covenant with Jesus, that we may use the authority that He has given us against the works of the devil and against the works of darkness. Because we are His heirs, we are bearers of His Name. As we enter 2021, do not be afraid of what this year holds because we are walking in the authority of Jesus’ Name. Greater Is He that is in me than he that is in the world, continue to be steadfast against the work of darkness.

Be steadfast with your covenant with God. Therefore remember, Who You Are in Christ this coming New Year. Do not feel defeated but speak against any circumstances in His Name. Remember that God is with us, and in Him there is victory and we are overcomers. In His Name, there is no darkness.

Living in Christ: Heirs of God

December 27, 2020, 1st Sunday of Christmas Theme: “Living in Christ: Heirs of God” Homily by Fr. Erel Villanueva Old Testament Proclamation: Isaiah 61:10 – 62:3 Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 148 New Testament Proclamation: Galatians 4:4-7 Gospel Proclamation: Luke 2:22-32

We will tackle the influence of His Family to Jesus and how they helped in fulfilling His calling and purpose.

Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to be circumcised after 8 days, and they went to the temple after 40 days of purification to dedicate the Lord Jesus to God as their sign of obedience to traditions.

This symbolizes that the child is of God, and they acknowledge that their first born will live all the days of his life in serving God— that they are Christ-owned forever.

That’s how our children will grow in the ways of the Lord. That’s what the parents should do: To obey God in the best of our abilities, and through our example we also introduce to our children the ways of God.

Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple for the child to see and follow their example in Godly things.

Just like Mary and Joseph, may it be that we also help our children fulfill their calling. It starts from us parents, and above all we should see to it that we have a personal relationship with God because the light of our devotion in serving God is what we will be passing on to our children, and to the next generations to come.

Living in Christ: Witnesses of the Light

December 25, 2020, Feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ Theme: “Living in Christ: Witnesses of the Light” Homily by Fr. Andy Ilustre Old Testament Proclamation: Isaiah 9:2-7 Responsorial Psalm :Isaiah 9:2-7 New Testament Proclamation: Titus 2:11-14 -5a Gospel Proclamation: John 1:1-14

“How can we spread the light to others?”

We need to walk with the Light and be the witness of it. In the beginning, before all time, the ‘Word’ was Christ and He was continually co-existing with God in the beginning. The Lord reigned before the world has begun together with His son Christ Jesus. He still does, and He will forever.

We should spend time with the Light so that we may manifest the light to the world. In the gospel, John was commissioned by God and sent forth. This man came as a witness to testify about the Light so that all might believe through him. You cannot tell who Christ is if you do not know Him. John was not the Light, but came to testify about the Light.

We only become a witness when we know the personality of God. Having a deep relationship with a person is also the same thing with the Lord. Through spending quality time—either by praying or meditating His word or both, we will get to know the very Heart of God. If we personally know Him it will become easy for us to become living testimonies and witnesses to the world of how good, faithful, and sovereign our God is.

December 24, 2020 Theme: “Living in Christ: The Light That Shines in the Darkness” Homily by Fr. Erel Villanueva Old Testament Proclamation : Isaiah 52:7-10 New Testament Proclamation: Hebrews 1:1-5a Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 96 Gospel Proclamation: Luke 2:1-14

Today, amidst the chaos, the pandemic, and the uncertainties, this is the good news:

“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” Luke 2:14 NKJV

The birth of Jesus Christ brings joy. And we rejoice because our Saviour is born. The birth of Christ brings peace. Let us continue to pray, and offer our praise and worship to God. These things that we do are the evidence that fear doesn’t control us—and we must never let fear reign in our hearts.

The birth of Christ brings goodwill and favor. We receive all the grace, mercy, favor and blessings from God because of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The celebration of Christmas leads us to mission—His birth is also a responsibility. We’ve been celebrating Christmas Candle Light Service for more than 30 years. Let’s take time to asses and ask ourselves, “In all these years, what have I learned?”

May this joyous celebration not end as tradition but as mission. In verses 14-18 of Luke 1, the shepherds heard the praises from the angel and the heavenly hosts to God. They went to Bethlehem and when they saw Jesus, they made widely known Jesus. They became missionaries.

The celebration of Christmas leads to the mission: bringing the good news.

We must go to the world and bring the good news of salvation. Our mission must not only be confined inside the four corners of the church only. And we proclaim this through our lives; seeking to bring peace and compassion to the world just as Jesus did.
